leadership-cayuga-logoWe’re entering the home stretch here with Leadership Cayuga! Project Presentations are coming up on May 9th at 9am at the Hilton Garden Inn and then we’ll be holding the Graduation Luncheon on Thursday May 30th! Sniff Sniff… This graduation class has such a heart for our community I’m very excited to see what they will accomplish. We’re not done yet and the past three months we’ve seen some important aspects of the community!

History and Government Day – This year’s history and government day was historic in that it was on the day of a snow storm! We didn’t let that stop us, we learned about the ins and outs of managing a city, what happens at city council meetings, and so much more from Stephanie DeVito ’15 Executive Director of the BID, Chuck Mason ’94 Auburn City Clerk, Jeff Dygert ’11 Auburn City Manager, Honorable Mayor Michael Quill, Mayor Bud Shattuck Mayor of Union Springs, Debby McCormick ’89 and Assemblyman Gary Finch. In the afternoon we were led in a very competitive round of Jeopardy by Maureen McEvers ’09. Then we heard all about Auburn’s industrious and entrepreneurial history from Mike Long. All in all a great day!

Education and Justice Day – We spent the day at the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES with an exciting tour from Steve Woodard, Director of CTE and were treated to a delicious lunch from the Culinary Arts Students! We learned about the vision and direction of our schools from Auburn Superintendent Jeff Pirozzolo ’08, Neil Bryan Port Byron Superintendent and Jon Roberts ’17 Assistant Principal of Auburn Junior High School. Our class also got to hear from members of the Port Byron and Auburn School Boards, Melinda Quanbeck, Ian Phillips ’15 and Kathy Rhodes.   We finished the day at the Cayuga County Sherriff’s office where we learned more about what they do from Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck and got a tour of the County Jail and inside look at the Cayuga County 911 Center.

Health and Wellness Day – This day focuses not just on the Health and Wellness of our community but also on our own. We delved into Work/Life Balance with Kate Budlong ’16. Got a refresher on healthy eating practices from the Deanna Hoey of the Cayuga County Health Department. Learned more about the opiod epidemic and what’s being done to save lives in our community from Joel Campagnola at Nik’s Ride 4 Friends. Learned more about health administration from Cayuga County Chamber Board Chair Tom Minicucci. We also heard from Chad Pens of COAST Physical Therapy and we all got a lesson on how to sit at our desks. We even got to hear about the important work that’s being done at the Cayuga Community Health Network from Executive Director Jessica Soule.
