Special 2025 Continuing Legal Ed for NYS Notaries at Cayuga CC hosted by Legal Scholar Alfred Piombino

Alfred E. Piombino will lead a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Update-Briefing for New York Notary Law on Friday, December 12 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Cayuga Community College in Auburn.  Car parking is free and no permit is required.  Light refreshments will be served.  Public transportation is available.

This highly-acclaimed, in-person CLE provides a comprehensive review of notarial duty and responsibilities.  This practical and fast-paced program reviews recent case decisions, state statutes and rules and regulations, and examines the New York legislative session.

It is especially valuable for notaries who self-studied for the state law examination without any formal instruction, attended a “webinar” that failed to address critical issues encountered in notarial practice, or lawyers or state court clerks that received a notary public commission without taking the customary, state law examination.

“Attendance at this seminar is a must for every commissioned Notary Public to properly execute the serious legal authority, duties and myriad responsibilities of holding this public officer appointment,” said Alfred E. Piombino, the state course pioneer.

This CLE will be invaluable not only to notaries, but to lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants, law students, bankers, real estate title professionals, town and village court judges and clerks who are involved with notarial acts and certificates within documents.

“Notarial-legal ineptitude, intentional or unintentional, definitively leads to the insidious denigration of all courts, erodes public confidence and stymies good-faith efforts to effectively and fairly deliver justice to litigants, victims and defendants.  Moreover, improperly drafted documents and defective notarial certificates increase risk for personal and professional legal liability, notes Piombino.

Like lawyers, simply taking and passing a state law examination (once), is a good start, but, in and of itself, it’s not sufficient preparation to fully understand and execute all the required duties –  certainly not for a lifetime, without diligent, continuing legal education,” said Piombino.

“First appointed as a New York Notary Public in 1981, I easily passed the state law examination because I was a college business school student, but I was humble enough to know that I didn’t fully understand the scope and depth of my duty which inspired my further legal research,” he adds.

“This frustration with a lack of accurate, adequate resources sparked my sense of intellectual curiosity and was the catalyst of forty-plus years of passion for this legal scholarship, researching, writing and teaching – to not only help other notaries and legal practitioners better protect themselves from legal liability, but also to protect the integrity of the civil and criminal court systems,” adds Piombino.

Piombino is a highly acclaimed teacher, court expert witness, prolific book author, past state court official and former State University of New York (SUNY) college business law faculty.  He is the renowned leading scholar on New York Notary Law and Practice and the original curriculum developer and faculty of Notary Public educational programs at scores of public and private colleges throughout New York, including Cayuga Community College.

Piombino was the lead investigator in a landmark, notary investigation in 1988, documenting for the first time widespread non-compliance with myriad legal requirements throughout New York State.  The special investigation report was widely reported in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The New York Law Journal and major news wire services throughout the US.  The special investigation report is also cited in judicial case decisions and articles to this day.

Two required textbooks (Notary Public Register and Recordkeeping Protocols and Notary Public Handbook: A Guide for New York) are included in the college tuition fee and will be distributed to all registrants on the day of the event.

The cost of the half-day program is $125.  Space is very limited for this Central New York, special author appearance and pre-registration is required.
