The Small Business Development Specialist (SBDS) works with entrepreneurs and small business owners to help them startup and grow through mentoring and connecting them to resources.  Success in this position is achieved through the number and quality of the business interactions, successful project implementation, and the development of a strong network of resources.  The candidate best suited for this position understands the fundamentals of business operations including business plans, financial projections, and marketing strategies.

Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build relationships with people from a wide range of backgrounds.  Each project presents its own unique challenges and opportunities, providing an ever-changing workday.  The right candidate is a creative problem solver, stays organized, prioritizes their workload, and is self-motivated to develop new programs.  Candidates must be comfortable working independently and also as part of a team.


  • Work with entrepreneurs and small business owners to assess their needs and connect to appropriate resources
  • Market available funding programs and assist with the application process
  • Facilitate business assistance and training programs
  • Develop programming to aid in small and new business growth
  • On-site visitations to existing businesses throughout Cayuga County
  • Coordinate entrepreneurial services and build an entrepreneurial ecosystem
  • Collaborate with local and regional partners

Candidates for this position should have an earned bachelor’s degree in business, management, operations, public administration, accounting, finance, or a related discipline.  The ideal candidate will have at least 2 to 5 years of experience in economic development, business development, sales, or a related field.
