DESCRIPTION:Syracuse artist Vanessa Johnson will give an Artist’s Talk at 5:30 p.m. Friday\, Aug. 5\, 2022\, to discuss her exhibit at the Schweinfurth Art Center and Cayuga Museum of History & Art\, “In God’s Voice: A Celebration of the Spirituality of Harriet Tubman.” The exhibit and talk are part of the City of Auburn’s Harriet Tubman Bicentennial celebration. Johnson’s quilts and fiber artworks examine Tubman’s faith in nature\, God\, and her supporters as she led enslaved people to freedom. Johnson’s exhibit is part of the Emerging Artists Project\, a joint exhibition of the Schweinfurth and Cayuga Museum. Her talk is part of Auburn’s First Friday event\, which opens cultural and historic sites for free from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of the month.

DESCRIPTION:Storyteller and artist Vanessa Johnson will lead two Summer Art Camps at the Schweinfurth Art Center from Aug. 8 to 12\, 2022. The morning camp\, which meets from 9 a.m. to noon\, is for children age 6 to 10 and will explore Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad history through art. The afternoon camp\, which meets from 1 to 4 p.m.\, is for children 11 to 15 and will celebrate Harriet Tubman’s life through art\, storytelling\, and song. Johnson is also featured in an Emerging Artists Project exhibit at the Schweinfurth and Cayuga Museum of History & Art\, “In God’s Voice: A Celebration of the Spirituality of Harriet Tubman\,” through Aug. 14\, 2022. \nSpace is limited. Our tournament benefits Nick’s Ride 4 Friends\, a grassroots\, not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals struggling with substance use disorders and other related mental health concerns navigate pathways towards recovery. \nOver the years of this tournament\, we have supported our own Beardsley Family and other local organizations. This year\, we have chosen to partner with Nick’s Ride 4 Friends. We have gotten to know the organization through our work in helping them to create their new facility on Chapel Street and we hope that the funds raised from this tournament can help them with office furniture and equipment. With these current times\, we know how difficult it might be financially to support an event like this\, but we sincerely thank everyone who has supported this event in the past and we hope for your continued support this year.
