City Sizzlin’ Summer Kick-Off:

The City of Auburn is presenting another festival to a summer schedule packed with lots of opportunities to enjoy outdoor fun in downtown Auburn! The 4th Annual Sizzlin’ Summer Kick-Off will take place on Exchange Street Plaza & the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center on June 22nd featuring two live band performances, an eclectic mix of merchants, food vendors serving up your summer favorites, plus beer, wine & cider sales. This event will happen rain or shine, with the City Parking Garage serving as the back-up location.

Let’s Chalk About It:
Now in its fourth year, the Sizzlin’ event continues to grow and evolve with new offerings each year. Starting earlier in the day is Auburn’s second sidewalk chalk art competition. Presented by the City of Auburn & Auburn Downtown BID, “Let’s Chalk About It Again!” will be happening on the grounds of the NYS ERHC from  12- 6PM. This event is modeled after highly successful chalk art competitions held in Sylvan Beach & the City of Syracuse. Youth, teenagers & adults will be creating artwork on the sidewalks of the NYS ERHC, to be enjoyed enroute to the Sizzlin’ event. A top prize, downtown gift certificates provided by Auburn Downtown BID, will be awarded in each age category. So far, judges are Amanda Tallcot, owner & founder of Accredited Art; and Auburn City Mayor Michael Quill.

Pre-registration for the competition closes June 14th but please call Kim at the City of Auburn Recreation Office 315.255-4737 to inquire if spots are still available after that date. It’s free to participate. Artists will complete their drawings by 6PM & winners will be announced at the courtyard of the NYS ERHC at 7PM. In the unfortunate circumstance of rain, this portion of the event will be cancelled or rescheduled.

Participating food vendors include Moondog’s Lounge, Big Awesome BBQ, 3 Little Pigs Pig Out Hot Dogs, KP’s Kettle Corn & Concession, Moonflower Macarons & Miss Alice’s Mad Hatters Cotton Candy. Some participating merchants include KJS Creations & Designs, jewelry, purses, placemats/potholders & more; Kim Guzalak, Young Living Essential Oils; Pete Cramer, shitake logs & permaculture plants; Bison Botanics, CBD oil & info; Georgia Yokom, handmade jewelry & sea glass art; Cherie Avery, handmade wood & tapestry signs; Origin Acupuncture offering mini acupuncture demos & info; MindBodyMeta, natural skin/body care in addition to tarot & oracle readings; plus much more! Also, Classic Hits 99.3 will be broadcasting live from the event. Come visit them for a quick game of cornhole for a chance to win some awesome prizes!

Live Music
Two bands will be performing. First, enjoy a performance by the local band The Honky Tonk Hindooz. The band is comprised of upright bass (Taylor Price), accordion (Theresa Walsh), and guitar (Terry Quill), the Hindooz play an eclectic blend of psychedelic garage country and weirdo rock and roll oldies from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.They specialize in original, countrified arrangements of popular songs by artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, The Kinks, Tom Waits, Buddy Holly, and The Clash, all in a jangly, swaggerly Roots-Americana stew. The Hindooz are tenaciously dedicated to playing real, raw music with their signature swagger and hillbilly hypnotism. Come experience the fun, euphoric spirit of The Honky Tonk Hindooz playing at the courtyard at the NYS ERHC from 6 – 7:30PM!

The second act, performing from 8 – 10PM, on the Showmobile stage facing Exchange Street, is Root Shock.

Formed in Syracuse in 2012, the band is comprised of the acrobatic, powerhouse vocals of Jessica Brown, earthy vocal turns as well as guitar stylings of Phil Grajko, keyboard genius Brian Lauri, bassist Bill Eppel & drummer Tyre Outerbridge who make a formidable rhythm section. Many fans of Root Shock have described the band’s infectious sound and energy as conscious, soulful, uplifting, even healing. Throughout their performance you’ll notice the band is fluent in reggae, funk, heavy dub style, and ska but they’ve developed a voice that really transcends genre. Their live shows delight audiences from all walks of like with a positive message & danceable tunes.

Root Shock has long been a fan favorite here in Auburn & the feeling is mutual. In October of 2018, Root Shock released a video of their original song, entitled, “Ripple” filmed entirely in Auburn. The video features familiar Auburn locations, businesses & faces. If you haven’t seen the video yet, check it out here & be sure to come see Root Shock spread the love on June 22nd!
